Outcomes & Measures: (self-reported)
Outcome 1
Participants experience close and positive peer relationships with disabled and non-disabled youths.
Measure
The number of kids participating in small groups, outings, and other relationship based programs. Feedback to staff and volunteers by students is noted. This area is a strength for our program with the typical participant experiencing close relationships within the group.
Outcome 2
Participants engage in relational, one-on-one or small group mentoring with a caring adult.
Measure
Data is kept on participation of kids in mentoring and small groups activities, that are focused on values clarification and life skills using the bible as a framework.
Outcome 3
Participants invest in the community and see themselves as "givers" rather than "takers." Often, giving back takes the form of helping others in the peer group, becoming a student leader, or volunteering with NBA upon graduation from High School.
Measure
The number of kids involved in community service, student leadership, and volunteerism is tracked.
Outcome 4
Participants make a faith commitment and become involved in the spiritual community of their choice.
Measure
Issues of faith are discussed regularly in mentoring and group activities and participants' views, faith perspective, and participation in a church are noted and recorded.
Outcome 5
Participants experiences increased physical activity, independence, and dexterity.
Measure
The number of regular participants in basketball, football, and other sports and recreation activities is recorded.
Change Process: (self-reported)
Program participants are drawn to NBA through the recreational and sports activities we provide, and often experience an increased sense of independence as they begin to view themselves as capable of doing highly physical activities.
In the meantime, through deepening relationships with peers and the input of caring adult volunteers, they begin to see themselves as part of a cohesive and closely connected group. This sense of community, often augmented by a growing awareness of God’s love for them through spiritually based activities helps the participant develop a new and positive identity, including:
- Viewing themselves as capable persons who are in control of the course of their lives and able to set a positive direction for their good and the good of others.
- Understanding that they are able to both give and receive help and counsel from others in the group and in a growing network of outside relationships.
- Understanding their disability in the context of being a child of God, uniquely created by Him to engage in special service to others, for God.
As the participant begins to grasp these key features of who they are, they are given the opportunity to live consistently with this identity through serving the group and the community at large. Often this happens through community service, student leadership, and volunteering for NBA or other activities.
