Change Process: (self-reported)
Most participants come into Greenwich House unable to take care of themselves and live independently. Many of our participants will not even admit that they have a mental illness. Through the structure of our program, we teach participants to manage their health by taking their medications as prescribed and regularly seeing doctors; to appropriately manage their living environments, such as cleaning and doing laundry by utilizing a routine; to manage their finances by budgeting their money correctly; to manage their symptoms by using appropriate coping skills; to prevent relapse by having a wellness plan and building appropriate support systems; and to take care of their daily needs by managing their hygiene and nutrition appropriately. We work one-on-one and in group settings with participants to teach them these skills and educate them on their illness. Each participant begins their treatment with strict guidelines and rules, so that they are able to adjust to the house and its structure. Each participant also works with a case manager to develop goals that she wants to work toward while at Greenwich House. As each participant makes effort to reach these goals or is able to meet them, she then progresses through different phases of the program. With each phase of the program, the participant earns more privileges, but also gains more responsibilities. As a participant nears completion of the program, the case manager helps her find placement in an appropriate living setting, whether it is her own apartment or a less-structured transitional program.
