Samaritan Award Report - Change Process

Change Process:

(self-reported)

Scoring for this section is based on the organizations ability to provide clear, measurable, client-focused stages of change based on participant participation.

The Academy is a disciplined 18-month rehabilitation men's program - 12 months residential, 6 months aftercare. Some men are court ordered, others walk in. Program candidates enter a one week orientaton, determining their readiness. Once accepted, they attend mandatory classes 14 hours a week, focusing on spiritual development, addictions education, emotional issues and life skills. They attend chapel services, elective classes and support groups. Among the electives are classes focusing on parenting, anger management and group counseling for married couples. They are involved in work therapy five hours daily learning good work ethics and obtaining marketable job skills. Each man is assigned a counselor and a mentor. Removal of gang-related and employment inhibiting tattoos is available. Diagnostic testing is done and men needing their GED or to enhance academic weaknesses can do so in the Computer Learning Center. We have a literacy and basic computer class. In the last quarter, men enter the Career Employment Service where they receive eight weeks of job readiness workshops, career testing, resume formation and mock job interviews. During the eleventh month, they begin their job search and develop an aftercare plan that they are required to follow when they leave. Once employed, they can choose to go into our transition home for up to one year or to return home. Their aftercare plan consists of weekly drug testing, two to three meetings per week, church attendance and weekly meetings with their mentor.
