Change Process:
(self-reported)
Scoring for this section is based on the organizations ability to provide clear, measurable, client-focused stages of change based on participant participation.
A battered woman increases her risk of being killed by her abuser to 75% by leaving so these women are EXTREMELY courageous and determined to protect and provide for their children. However, they have been stripped of their dignity and self-confidence so, at the Shelter, dignity and self-confidence are reawakened and restored—both through the encouragement of the staff and volunteers, the classes and therapy sessions and opportunities to re-connect with their God.
The classes are designed to help each woman become the best person, parent and provider she can. We also provide legal assistance, medical referrals and housing referrals. She develops the skills she needs and moves into being more hopeful and independent. Soon, she begins to plan for her future and set realistic goals for getting there. Eventually, she is ready to find her own home.
The children learn through therapeutic activities and school, both the academic, social and coping skills needed to heal, live healthily, succeed and, most importantly, to break the generational cycle of violence which is the only TRUE solution to domestic violence.
