Outcomes & Measures: (self-reported)

Outcome 1
Higher educational achievement

Measure
Testing in educational components runs concurrent with the academic year, so participants complete a standardized achievement test at the beginning and end of the school year. Particpants or their parents are asked to provide grade reports at specified intervals. We record participants' math, reading, overall GPA, number of days absent and number of days tardy. For those participants in our college component of the program, staff regularly make personal contact not only with students but also with professors and other contact persons at universities.

Outcome 2
Ability to set and achieve goals

Measure
Under the guidance of staff, participants are required to set goals at the beginning of the program. The goals are typically very practical (e.g. pay rent each month, keep a job for at least a year, go back to school, etc.) so are easily measured by the staff working personally with participants.

Outcome 3
Increased leadership skills and self-esteem

Measure
A measure developed by the Memphis Alliance for Public Health Research (MAP) is utilized in leadership components. This assesses attitudes, knowledge and beliefs in nine domains: race/human relations, leadership, conflict resolution, communication skills, critical thinking, problem solving, civic responsibility, public speaking and trust. The questionnaire is administered each year at the beginning and end of the program.

Outcome 4
Development of useful life skills, including money management

Measure
Following initial training in money management, participants bring monthly bank statements to staff in order to evaluate saving/spending patterns and therefore, to assess the effectiveness of the program. A questionnaire is also administered at the beginning and end of the program to assess participants' knowledge of basic economic principles as taught in the program. Broader life skills are measured on a more long-term basis, since many participants come into Affiliate Ministries as children and continue through adulthood. Regular contact is made with each participant, so we have the opportunity to see children develop work ethics and work skills that lead to stable careers.

Outcome 5
Spiritual growth

Measure
Records are kept for any known professions of Christian faith. However, spiritual growth is essentially measured by staff and volunteers through the personal, long-term relationships with participants.

Change Process: (self-reported)

Because of our long-term service philosophy, we witness participants gradually transition from dependence to interdependence, helplessness to empowerment, poverty to stability, isolation to inclusiveness, unskillfulness to competence, insecurity to confidence, and hardened to compassionate.
