Program Mission Statement: (self-reported)

A foster care program for family pets in crisis.

In a violent family everyone is a victim, including the family pet. Animal abuse may be a warning sign of a violent home. It may be used as a threat to a spouse, a partner, elderly parents, or a child. But it’s always serious. And just like other family members, pets need a safe place to be. The DVC Pet Safe Program is predicated on this one simple, true but awful understanding. This program is designed to help those families in domestic violence situations.

The Domestic Violence Center of Howard County will make every effort to provide foster care for the animals involved in domestic violence situations. Pets are housed in this program until the victim can provide a safe home for their pet(s).

This program was established five years ago when several victims of domestic abuse refused to leave their situation for fear that their family pet would suffer the wrath of abuse. It was because of this that the Domestic Violence Center designed and implemented a program partnering with our local animal welfare society and several veterinarians to provide these needed services to our clients. There are no fees for this service.
